Natural Mineral Water vs Spring Water: What's the Difference?
Walk down any bottled water aisle and you'll see labels like "natural mineral water," "spring water," "purified water," and "artesian water" and often at very different price points. Most people assume they're all more or less the same thing. But They're not! The differences come down to where the water originates, how it's processed, and what's actually in it.
Where the Water Comes From
Spring water comes from an underground formation where water flows naturally to the surface, or is collected via a borehole that taps the same underground source. It must be collected at the spring itself or through a hole drilled directly into the underground aquifer feeding that spring. It typically undergoes some filtration before bottling, but it isn't chemically altered.
A good example is Himalayan Still Water. Sourced from the Himalayas and bottled as spring water, it's a clean, lightly mineralized option that reflects the classic "spring water" category.
Natural mineral water also comes from an underground source, but the defining feature is that it must contain a consistent, naturally occurring level of minerals and trace elements like calcium, magnesium, potassium, and bicarbonates. Water is sourced directly from the rock and soil it passes through. In most countries with regulated standards, mineral water can't be treated in ways that alter its mineral composition, and it's typically bottled close to the source with minimal processing.
Evian Natural Mineral Water, sourced from the French Alps, is one of the most recognized examples of this category. Its mineral profile (calcium, magnesium, bicarbonate) is consistent bottle to bottle, which is exactly what the "natural mineral water" designation requires.
Mineral Content: The Real Differentiator
This is the biggest practical difference:
- Natural mineral water has a guaranteed, stable mineral profile that must stay consistent from batch to batch. Brands are usually required to disclose exact mineral content (TDS — total dissolved solids) on the label.
- Spring water may contain minerals too, since it's still groundwater, but there's no regulatory requirement for a specific mineral composition, and it can vary more from source to source.
If you want a water with a known, stable mineral makeup, mineral water is the safer bet — the label tells you exactly what you're getting.
What About Sparkling Mineral Water?
Some natural mineral waters are also naturally carbonated at the source, or have carbonation added back in during bottling. Perrier Sparkling Mineral Water, sourced from a spring in southern France, is a well-known example — it's still classified as natural mineral water, just with effervescence added.
Regulation and Labeling
In most markets, "natural mineral water" is a protected term with strict legal criteria: it must come from a protected underground source, meet defined purity standards at the point of collection, and maintain stable mineral levels. "Spring water" has looser requirements in many regions and can sometimes undergo more processing without losing the label.
Taste
Because of differing mineral content, taste is often the most noticeable difference to consumers:
- Mineral water can taste slightly saline, earthy, or "heavier," depending on calcium and magnesium levels.
- Spring water is generally lighter and cleaner-tasting, closer to what most people expect from "plain" drinking water.
Neither is objectively better. It basically comes down to individual preference.
Which Should You Choose?
Both are natural, both come from protected underground sources, and both are considered decent choices compared to purified or underground water. But the real difference is mineral consistency and taste.Â
